Loukia Alavanou is a moving-image artist and filmmaker. Since 2018, she has been involved in the field of VR, having founded the first VR film production company in Greece. In 2022, she represented Greece at the 59th Venice Biennale.

For biographical reasons, Alavanou’s art practice may relate to certain elements of British film history, past and present, but it is also indebted to other places, notably Greece and Latin America. This situational vagueness—a welcome antidote to the much-vaunted site-specificity—is a driving force for Alavanou. Her collage-like films refer to places both real and imaginary, yet dwell in atopological dark spaces: ruins, post-capitalist wastelands, gold mines, and the dark rooms of photography and cinema.

Alavanou’s work has been presented at Casino Luxembourg, KANAL - Centre Pompidou (Brussels), Accelerator (Stockholm), Taichung Art Museum, Bozar (Brussels), DESTE Foundation (Athens), KINO DER KUNST (Munich), SMFA (Boston), Palais de Tokyo (Paris), Moscow Biennale, State Museum of Contemporary Art (Thessaloniki), Museum of Cycladic Art (Athens), the Athens Biennale, and Kunsthalle Chemnitz, among others. Her work is also included in international collections such as the Gucci Collection, Onassis Culture, Dakis Ioannou Collection, ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, PCAI (Polyeco Contemporary Art Initiative), and the Fiorucci Art Trust.

Alavanou studied photography at the Royal College of Art. She was the winner of the 5th DESTE Prize.
