Extracting sequences from popular films and animations, Loukia Alavanou digitally manipulates material to create darkly humorous versions of familiar narratives. In Wishing Well she interlaces a short extract from the first feature-length animation, Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs (Disney, 1937), with images from The Skeleton Dance (Disney, 1929), the first ‘silly symphony’ where short animations were based on musical scores. In this two-minute circular projection Snow White sings of how she wishes to be found by “the one I love” while addressing her own reflection as she leans over the edge of the well. Alavanou’s re-animation of these influential historical animations known for their lightness brings a different, darker twist to the original story. (Lisa Le Feuvre)
